Monuments for Morris County and Northern NJ

Monroe Monuments has been creating custom granite and marble monuments for Northern New Jersey families for more than 80 years. Every monument we produce — from a standard single upright to a hand-carved obelisk or angel — is designed, fabricated, and installed by our own team at our Butler, NJ workshop. Nothing is outsourced, and no two monuments are exactly alike.

We serve families throughout Morris County, Passaic County, Essex County, Bergen County, Sussex County, and surrounding areas. If your family has a cemetery plot in Northern NJ, we can help you create a memorial worthy of the person it honors.

Types of Monuments We Create

Single upright monuments are the most traditional form — a vertical granite stone on a granite base, engraved with the person’s name, dates, and inscription. They range from understated and dignified to detailed and sculptural depending on what the family chooses.

Companion (double) monuments are wide enough to memorialize two individuals side by side. One side is engraved at the time of the first passing; the other is completed later. This is the most common type of family monument and can be designed from the start to accommodate future completion.

Family (triple) monuments span a wider base and accommodate three or more individuals. These are often designed with a shared family name prominently displayed across the top, with individual sections below. They create a strong sense of family legacy.

Memorial bench monuments combine function with meaning — a granite bench at the grave provides a place for visitors to sit and reflect while also serving as the primary memorial. Benches can be engraved on the seat, front, back, and ends for comprehensive personalization.

Obelisk monuments are tall four-sided pillars that taper to a point — one of the oldest memorial forms in history. A granite obelisk creates a striking, commanding presence in any cemetery section. All four faces can carry engraved text and imagery.

Specialty and custom monuments include angel shapes, cross and Star of David monuments, heart shapes, tree trunk carvings, book-form monuments, and fully custom silhouettes that exist nowhere else. If you can describe it or sketch it, our artisans can likely build it.

Granite Options

All of our monuments are available in our standard granite grades: Jet Black African (the densest, darkest, and most weather-resistant), Barre Gray (a classic Vermont domestic granite with a natural salt-and-pepper texture), Mahogany Red (a warm reddish-brown with dramatic crystalline flecking), and Royal Blue Pearl (an imported Norwegian granite with deep iridescent blue character).

Specialty colors are available on request. Visit our Butler showroom to see and touch actual granite samples before you decide — photographs do not convey the full depth and variation of the stone.

The Monroe Monuments Design Process

Every custom monument project starts with a conversation. We discuss the person being memorialized, the family’s preferences, the cemetery’s regulations, and the budget. From that conversation we generate a digital proof — a precise rendering that shows the exact monument design, dimensions, text layout, and decorative elements — before cutting begins.

You review and approve the proof. Revisions are part of the process. We do not begin fabrication until you are satisfied with what you see on paper.

Fabrication takes place in our Butler workshop. Most monuments complete in four to eight weeks. Complex specialty carvings and larger family monuments may take longer, and we will give you a realistic timeline at approval.

Installation and Cemetery Coordination

Every monument order includes full installation at your cemetery. We contact the cemetery office directly to confirm foundation requirements, obtain necessary permits, and schedule the installation window. You do not need to manage any part of this process.

We have installed at cemeteries throughout Northern NJ for over 80 years and know the requirements at most major sites in the region. Approvals and installations proceed smoothly because we have done it before — many times.
