Monument Restoration & Refinishing NJ | Monroe Monuments

Northern New Jersey’s climate is hard on outdoor memorials. Freeze-thaw cycles, acid rain, biological growth, and time work together on granite, marble, and bronze surfaces. Monroe Monuments performs monument restoration and refinishing services throughout Morris County and Northern NJ — returning worn, weathered, and damaged memorials to their original dignity.

What We Restore

Cleaning and biological removal. Lichen, moss, algae, and dirt accumulate on cemetery stones over years. We clean stone surfaces using non-acidic, monument-safe solutions that remove biological growth without damaging the stone. We never use pressure washing or bleach, which can deteriorate stone surfaces and accelerate weathering.

Re-lettering and re-painting. Engraved inscriptions on older stones often have filled paint that has faded or flaked away. We strip the old fill, clean the letter forms, and re-apply fresh gold, silver, or dark fill to restore the inscription to crisp readability.

Re-cutting faded lettering. On very old stones where the engraved letter forms themselves have weathered shallow, we re-cut the lettering to restore proper depth. This requires careful technique to avoid altering the original design.

Structural repair and resetting. Foundations settle over time, particularly in NJ’s clay-heavy soils. We excavate, repair or rebuild foundations, and re-level monuments that have tilted, shifted, or partially sunk. A properly reset stone should sit plumb and stable for another generation.

Bronze re-patination. Bronze memorial features — plaques, doors, handles, and lettering — develop a patina over time. We can clean bronze to a bright finish or apply a controlled patina finish that returns it to a consistent, maintained appearance.

Restoration of Very Old Monuments

Some families in Morris County have plots with stones going back to the early 1900s or older. We have experience with the different stone types and engraving styles of earlier eras and understand how to work conservatively to preserve historical character while addressing structural and readability issues.

Older marble monuments in particular require a different approach than granite — marble is softer, more porous, and more susceptible to acid damage from cleaning products. We use techniques appropriate to the material.

On-Site Assessment

Restoration begins with a site visit. We assess the stone’s condition, identify what work is feasible, and provide a straightforward estimate before any work begins. We will tell you honestly what can be improved and what cannot.

Call (973) 492-2820 to request an assessment, or provide us with the cemetery name and plot location through our website’s Quick Quote form.

When to Call for an Assessment

If you visit a family plot and notice any of the following, it is worth contacting us for a restoration assessment:

  • The headstone is tilting or has shifted from its original position
  • The foundation appears to have sunk or cracked
  • Inscriptions are difficult to read — either the letters are shallow or the paint fill has faded
  • Biological growth (moss, lichen, black algae) has discolored the surface
  • Bronze elements have turned heavily green or have surface pitting
  • Chips, cracks, or structural damage have appeared on the stone

Some of these conditions are purely cosmetic and easily corrected. Others involve structural concerns that should be addressed before they worsen. We will tell you honestly which is which and what each repair will involve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call or send a Quick Quote — we respond the same day.

What restoration services does Monroe Monuments offer?

We offer cleaning, re-polishing, re-lettering weathered inscriptions, structural repair, resetting tilted or sunken monuments, and bronze re-patination. We restore granite, marble, and bronze memorials.

How much does monument restoration cost?

Costs vary based on the extent of work needed. Simple cleaning starts at a few hundred dollars. Major structural repair or re-lettering may cost more. We provide free on-site assessments.

Can you fix a headstone that has fallen over or is sinking?

Yes. We reset tilted and sunken monuments by re-leveling the foundation and re-securing the stone. This is common in older NJ cemeteries.

How often should a headstone be cleaned?

Professional cleaning every 3–5 years helps maintain appearance and prevent biological growth. Granite requires less frequent cleaning than marble.

Can you restore very old headstones?

In most cases, yes. We have restored monuments over 100 years old. The approach depends on the stone type, extent of damage, and cemetery regulations.

Do you clean headstones at the cemetery or remove them?

Most cleaning and restoration is done on-site at the cemetery. We only remove a stone if major structural repair requires shop work.

What cleaning products do you use?

We use non-acidic, stone-safe cleaning solutions that remove biological growth without damaging the granite or marble surface. We never use bleach or pressure washers on memorial stones.

Can faded gold or silver lettering be restored?

Yes. We strip old paint from engraved letters and re-apply fresh gold, silver, or dark fill. The result looks as crisp as the original.

Will restoration damage the existing design?

No. Our restoration techniques are conservative and non-destructive. We enhance what exists rather than altering the original design.

How do I request a restoration assessment?
