Mausoleum Design & Building NJ | Monroe Monuments
A private or family mausoleum is one of the most significant and lasting memorials a family can commission. Monroe Monuments has designed and built custom mausoleums in Northern New Jersey for over 80 years, managing every phase of the project from initial design through final installation and cemetery approval.
Types of Mausoleums We Build
Private single-crypt mausoleums are designed for one individual. They are the smallest and most accessible entry point for families seeking an above-ground memorial structure.
Companion mausoleums accommodate two individuals, most commonly a married couple, in side-by-side crypts. These are the most popular private mausoleum type and can be designed with equal visual balance on both sides.
Family mausoleums with four, six, or more crypts allow multiple generations to share a permanent above-ground memorial. These structures are larger and more architecturally involved, but they create a lasting family legacy and can reduce per-person memorial costs when the structure is used across generations.
Combination mausoleums include both crypt spaces for full casket burials and niche spaces for cremation urns. These are increasingly popular as family burial preferences evolve over time.
Design and Customization
The exterior of a Monroe Monuments mausoleum is built in granite — the most durable outdoor building material for the Northern NJ climate. We work in our full range of granite grades and can incorporate architectural details that reflect the family’s aesthetic preferences.
Custom options include bronze doors with personalized engraving, stained glass windows (single or multi-panel), decorative pilasters and columns, carved floral and symbolic details, and personalized family name and dates carved in relief above the entrance. Interior finishes can include marble surfaces, bronze hardware, and interior lighting.
Every mausoleum design begins with a conversation about what matters to the family — how the structure should feel to enter, how it should look from the cemetery drive, and what details will make it unmistakably theirs.
Engineering, Permitting, and Construction
Private mausoleum construction involves structural engineering, cemetery permitting, and construction coordination that goes well beyond standard monument installation. Monroe Monuments manages all of it.
We begin by confirming the cemetery’s policies on private mausoleum construction — not all cemeteries permit them, and those that do have specific size, setback, and material requirements. We have experience navigating these regulations at cemeteries throughout Northern NJ.
From there, we coordinate structural engineering for the foundation and walls, submit all required permit applications, and schedule construction phases with cemetery staff. We handle all ground preparation and construction work with our own crews.
Timeline
Most mausoleum projects run three to six months from design approval to completion. Simpler single and companion mausoleums on the shorter end; larger family structures with extensive custom detailing on the longer end. We provide a detailed project timeline at the design approval stage.

Interior Design Options
The interior of a mausoleum is where families spend time in reflection. We offer a range of interior finish options to create a space that feels right for your family.
Interior walls can be finished in polished marble (white, cream, or colored), granite panels coordinated with the exterior, or a combination. Bronze hardware — door handles, name plates, vase holders, and memorial fixtures — adds warmth and durability. Recessed lighting can be incorporated for interior visibility. Personalized carved or engraved elements on the interior walls can include family names, faith symbols, scripture or other meaningful text, and decorative borders.
Working With Your Cemetery
Not every cemetery permits private mausoleum construction. Those that do have varying requirements for structure size, setback from adjacent plots, materials, and permitting procedures. Monroe Monuments researches these requirements before any design work begins, so the design we create for you is one that can actually be built at your chosen site.
We maintain working relationships with cemetery administrators throughout Morris County and Northern NJ and have experience navigating the approval process at most major sites. This experience means fewer delays and smoother project progress.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions families ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call or send a Quick Quote — we respond the same day.
How much does a mausoleum cost in NJ?
Mausoleum pricing varies significantly based on size, design, materials, and cemetery requirements. Single-crypt mausoleums start in the tens of thousands. Contact us for a detailed consultation and estimate.
How long does it take to build a mausoleum?
Custom mausoleum projects typically take 3–6 months from design approval to completion, depending on complexity, permitting, and material availability.
Does Monroe Monuments handle cemetery permits for mausoleums?
Yes. We manage all permitting, foundation engineering, and coordination with cemetery administration. This is included in our full-service mausoleum build.
What materials are used for mausoleums?
We work primarily in granite for exterior construction. Interior options include marble, granite, and bronze fixtures. All materials are selected for durability in NJ weather conditions.
Can you build a family mausoleum with multiple crypts?
Yes. We design and build mausoleums with single, double, and multi-crypt configurations to accommodate family needs.
What is the difference between a mausoleum and a columbarium?
A mausoleum holds full casket burials above ground. A columbarium holds cremation urns. We can design both, and some families choose a combination.
Can I customize the exterior design of a mausoleum?
Absolutely. We offer fully custom exterior designs including architectural details, stained glass, bronze doors, and personalized engravings.
Do all NJ cemeteries allow private mausoleums?
Not all. Cemetery regulations vary. We can help you determine whether your chosen cemetery permits private mausoleum construction and what their specific requirements are.
Is a mausoleum more expensive than a traditional burial?
Generally yes. A mausoleum is a larger investment than a standard headstone and burial. However, a family mausoleum can serve multiple generations, potentially reducing per-person costs.
Can I visit a completed Monroe Monuments mausoleum?
We can provide photos of completed projects and, with family permission, share locations of our work in area cemeteries. Contact us to discuss.
