Monument Lettering, Etching & Engraving NJ | Monroe Monuments

Monument engraving, lettering, and etching is one of the most personal services we provide at Monroe Monuments. Whether you are adding information to an existing headstone, commissioning new text for a freshly fabricated memorial, or having a portrait permanently etched into granite, the work requires precision and skill developed over decades.

Adding Lettering to Existing Monuments

One of the most common requests we receive is adding a surviving spouse’s name, dates, and inscription to an existing companion headstone. When a spouse passes and the stone was pre-engraved with only one side completed, we return to the cemetery (or bring the stone to our shop if the work is extensive) and complete the second side.

We match the existing font style, letter size, and spacing exactly. If the original engraving used a specific style that has aged differently from fresh cuts, we replicate the depth and technique to create a consistent appearance. The result should look as if both sides were always intended to be exactly as they are.

Sandblasting and Deep-Cut Lettering

For new monuments and restoration projects requiring crisp, durable inscriptions, sandblasting is our standard technique. A resist material is applied to the stone surface, cut to reveal the text and design areas, and then high-pressure abrasive is applied to cut the letter forms into the granite. The result is a letter that maintains its legibility for generations.

Depth of cut, width of stroke, and finish treatment (painted, shadowed, or natural stone) all contribute to how the inscription reads from a distance and how it ages over time. We advise on these choices based on the stone grade and the visibility needs at the specific cemetery section.

Laser Etching for Portraits and Fine Detail

Laser etching allows us to transfer photographic-quality images onto polished black granite surfaces. The result is a permanent image that does not fade, peel, or deteriorate. We use laser etching primarily for portrait work — a clear photograph of the deceased reproduced on the stone — and for fine-detail artwork such as detailed landscapes, intricate floral borders, and complex religious imagery.

The quality of the source photograph matters. We ask for high-resolution, well-lit images with good contrast. We review every photo before committing to the work and will advise if a particular image is not suitable.

Hand Carving

For specialty monument shapes, three-dimensional elements, and sculptural details, hand carving remains the most expressive technique. Our carvers work in granite and marble to produce relief carvings, three-dimensional figures, decorative borders, and custom silhouettes that cannot be achieved by machine.

On-Site Cemetery Work

Many engraving additions — particularly single name and date additions to existing companion stones — can be performed on-site at the cemetery without removing the stone. We bring portable equipment to the grave and complete the work in place. This minimizes disruption and eliminates the risk of transit damage.

Work that is more extensive (full portrait etching, repair of a broken stone, deep re-cutting of a badly weathered surface) requires bringing the stone to our Butler workshop.

Languages and Specialized Lettering

We engrave in any language. This includes Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, and other languages common in Northern NJ communities. Provide the text and we will create a proof for your approval before any cutting begins. For right-to-left languages, we pay careful attention to layout and flow to ensure the inscription reads naturally.

We can also match obscure historical fonts for restoration projects or replicate the distinctive hand-lettering style found on older grave markers.

Pricing and Estimates

Engraving pricing depends on the amount of text, the technique used, and whether the work is performed on-site at the cemetery or requires bringing the stone to our shop. Simple name and date additions to existing companion stones are among our most affordable services. Portrait etching and complex custom artwork are priced based on the size and detail of the work.

We provide free estimates. Contact us with the cemetery location and a description of the work needed, or bring photos to our showroom. We will quote the work in plain terms so you know exactly what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call or send a Quick Quote — we respond the same day.

Can you add lettering to an existing headstone?

Yes. We regularly add names, dates, and inscriptions to existing granite and marble headstones. This is commonly done to add a surviving spouse's information to a companion stone.

What engraving techniques do you use?

We use sandblasting for deep-cut lettering, laser etching for portraits and detailed artwork, and hand carving for specialty designs. The technique depends on the stone type and desired result.

How much does headstone engraving cost?

Engraving costs depend on the amount of text, technique used, and whether the work is done on-site at the cemetery or in our shop. Contact us for a free estimate.

Can you etch a photo onto a headstone?

Yes. We offer laser-etched portraits on granite surfaces. The result is a permanent, weather-resistant image that will last for decades.

How long does engraving take?

Simple lettering additions typically take 1–2 weeks. Portrait etching and complex designs may take 2–4 weeks.

Do you need to remove the headstone from the cemetery?

Not always. Many lettering additions can be done on-site at the cemetery. Larger projects or portrait etching may require temporary removal to our shop.

What fonts and styles are available for engraving?

We offer dozens of font styles from traditional serif to modern clean lettering. We can also match existing fonts on a companion stone. Samples are available in our showroom.

Can you fix or re-cut faded lettering on an old headstone?

Yes. Our restoration service includes re-cutting and re-painting faded inscriptions to restore readability.

What information typically goes on a headstone?

Most headstones include the full name, birth and death dates, and an optional epitaph or religious symbol. Family headstones often include a shared family name at the top.

Can you engrave in languages other than English?

Yes. We can engrave in any language including Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and more. Provide the text and we will create a proof for your approval.
