Custom Monument Fabrication NJ | Monroe Monuments

Monroe Monuments has been designing and fabricating custom memorials at our Butler, New Jersey workshop for more than 80 years. Every monument we produce — from a simple flat marker to a hand-carved angel sculpture — is built by our own artisans from concept through cemetery installation. Nothing is outsourced.

The Custom Monument Process

Custom monument fabrication begins with a conversation. You tell us about the person you are memorializing — their personality, interests, faith, and the visual qualities that defined them. From there, our team suggests materials, shapes, granite grades, and design elements that bring that vision to life.

Once we understand your direction, we create a digital proof: a precise rendering showing the exact dimensions, text layout, engraving details, and sculptural elements. You review and approve the proof before a single cut is made. Revisions at this stage are part of the process.

After proof approval, fabrication begins in our Butler workshop. Most custom monuments take four to eight weeks to complete, depending on design complexity and stone availability. Specialty hand-carved work — three-dimensional angels, obelisks, custom silhouettes — may take longer, and we will give you a realistic timeline at the approval stage.

Materials We Work With

Granite is our primary material for outdoor monuments because it is exceptionally durable in New Jersey’s climate. Our standard grades include Jet Black African (the densest and most weather-resistant), Barre Gray (a Vermont domestic granite with natural texture that resists moss), Mahogany Red (a warm reddish-brown with dramatic flecking), and Royal Blue Pearl (an imported Norwegian granite with deep iridescent character).

For clients who want a different aesthetic, we also work in marble and bronze. Marble offers classic beauty but requires more maintenance than granite over time. Bronze is ideal for flat plaques and combination granite-bronze monuments.

What Can Be Customized

The answer is nearly everything. Shape, size, silhouette, surface texture (polished, sawn, or flamed), and color are all variables. Engraved text, portrait etching, religious symbols, military emblems, fraternal organization logos, floral designs, landscape scenes, and abstract artwork can all be incorporated. If a family has a drawing, a symbol, or a photograph that holds meaning, we can work with it.

Our most distinctive work involves fully custom silhouettes — monuments that depart from the standard flat-top or oval-top profile and take on a shape unique to the individual. These are hand-designed, hand-cut, and hand-polished in our shop.

Installation and Cemetery Coordination

Every custom monument order includes full installation at the NJ cemetery of your choice. We contact the cemetery directly to confirm foundation requirements, obtain the necessary permits, and schedule the installation window. You do not have to navigate cemetery administration — we handle it entirely.

Our installation teams work at cemeteries throughout Morris County, Passaic County, Essex County, Bergen County, and Sussex County. Call (973) 492-2820 or visit our showroom to begin.

Matching Existing Family Monuments

One of the most common custom fabrication requests we receive is matching an existing family headstone — adding a companion stone that coordinates with a monument already in place. We take a reference photo or visit the cemetery to identify the granite grade, surface finish, base profile, and letter style used in the original stone. The new stone is designed to visually integrate with what is already there while standing as its own complete memorial.

This matching process requires experience and attention to detail that not every monument company provides. At Monroe Monuments, it is a routine part of what we do.

Delivering What You Designed

A monument is a permanent object. Once it is installed at the cemetery, it represents the family’s decision for generations. We take this responsibility seriously at every stage — in the quality of stone we source, the precision of the fabrication, and the care of the installation. The digital proof process exists to ensure that what you approved is exactly what gets built. We do not cut corners between approval and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call or send a Quick Quote — we respond the same day.

What is the process for designing a custom monument?

The process starts with a consultation at our Butler NJ showroom or by phone. We discuss your vision, select materials, and create a digital proof for your review. After approval, fabrication takes 3–8 weeks. We handle cemetery permits and installation.

How much does a custom monument cost in NJ?

Custom monuments vary widely based on size, stone grade, and design complexity. Upright granite monuments start around $2,500. Large family monuments and specialty designs can range to $10,000 or more. We provide free detailed estimates.

What materials do you work with?

We primarily work with granite (Jet Black African, Barre Gray, Mahogany Red, Royal Blue Pearl), marble, and bronze. Granite is the most popular choice for NJ due to its resistance to freeze-thaw cycles.

Can you create monuments with custom shapes or designs?

Yes. We create angel-shaped, cross, Star of David, heart, bench-style, and completely custom-shaped monuments. If you can describe it or sketch it, we can likely fabricate it.

How long does custom monument fabrication take?

Most custom monuments take 4–8 weeks from design approval to completed installation. Complex designs with hand carving or specialty stone may take longer. We provide a timeline estimate at the design approval stage.

Do you provide a digital proof before fabrication begins?

Yes. Every custom monument project includes a digital proof showing the exact design, text, and layout. We do not begin fabrication until you review and approve the proof.

Can you visit your showroom to see monument examples?

Absolutely. Our showroom at 1250 State Hwy 23 North, Suite 12, Butler, NJ is open Monday–Friday 10AM–5PM and Saturday 10AM–3PM. You can see finished monument examples and touch actual granite samples.

Do you install monuments at any cemetery in New Jersey?

We install at cemeteries throughout Morris County and Northern NJ. Contact us to confirm availability at your cemetery.

What happens if I want to change the design after approval?

Minor changes to text or layout can usually be accommodated before fabrication begins. Once cutting has started, changes may incur additional costs. We discuss this clearly during the approval stage.

Can you add engraving to an existing monument?

Yes. Our lettering and etching service can add inscriptions, dates, or images to existing granite and marble monuments.
